Mads Andersen realises Premier League ‘dream’ after joining Luton from Barnsley

Luton have signed Barnsley captain Mads Andersen for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old Danish central defender spent four years at Oakwell and made 175 appearances for the Tykes.

“I’m so excited. It’s a dream come true,” Anderson told the official Luton website of his move to the Premier League new boys.

“When I made my move in Denmark from Brondby to a lower team in the same division, me and my dad spoke about it and I said, ‘In one and a half years, I’m going to go to the Championship’, and that is exactly what happened.

“During that period I also wrote on a piece of paper ‘Premier League’, and stuck it on the fridge.

“I completely forgot about it, until my…

Jack Hendry: Defeat to NI ‘disappointing’ but Scotland remain positive for Euros

Scotland defender Jack Hendry will remain positive and make the most of their Euro 2024 opportunity after a seventh game without a win saw some fans turn against the team.

Boos rang out during and after the 1-0 Hampden defeat by Northern Ireland as Scotland failed to make the most of the vast majority of possession.

Conor Bradley’s first-half strike, which came courtesy of Nathan Patterson’s error, gave Michael O’Neill’s young side something to hold on to, and they did so successfully as Scotland struggled to hit the target or carve out a series of clear-cut chances.

Scotland had not gone seven matches without victory for 19 years – that sequence helped spell the end of Berti Vogts’ reign as manager.

But such runs can turn quickly in the other…

Rodriguez out for revenge

Maxi Rodriguez is determined to exact revenge after Germany eliminated Argentina at the quarter-final stage of the past two FIFA World Cups.

Sunday s World Cup decider at the iconic Maracana in Rio de Janeiro will see Argentina and Germany go head-to-head, with plenty of history between the two nations.

Argentina and Germany contested back-to-back finals in 1986 and 1990 with both countries winning one world title apiece during that period.

More recently, the two nations squared off in consecutive quarter-final fixtures in 2006 and 2010.

Host nation Germany prevailed 4-2 on penalties after scores were locked at one-all at the end of extra time on home soil, before the Europeans routed Argentina 4-0 four years later in South Africa.

Costa departs Valencia

Valencia have cancelled the contract of captain Ricardo Costa by mutual consent.

The 33-year-old defender has plied his trade at the Mestalla since May 2010 after completing his move from Wolfsburg.

Costa s contract was not due to expire until June 2015, but the Portugal international who made 20 La Liga appearances last season will leave the club 12 months early.

I m leaving Valencia in good conscience and with the affection of the fans, he told the club s official website.

[These] have been years of great happiness where I felt the support of the fans in good times and bad times.

I want to send greetings to all Valencianistas, the workers, my colleagues, the media and everyone with whom I have shared moments.

It is time to start a ne…

Martin Demichelis set for Espanyol switch

Argentine defender Martin Demichelis is set to sign for La Liga outfit Espanyol, various reports in Spain have suggested.

The 35-year-old was released by Manchester City at the end of last season and he now looks set to return to Spanish La Liga.

Marca, Sport and Cadena COPE are reporting that Espanyol have all but reached an agreement with the experienced centre-back and they could announce the deal by the end of the day.

Martin Demichelis enjoyed two and a half very successful seasons with Malaga before joining Atletico Madrid on a free transfer in July 2013.

Oddly enough, he was sold to Manchester City just a month and a half later, failing to play a single game for los Colchoneros.

The player’s career in England was riddled with costly mist…

Copa do Brasil Review: Robinho scores first goal as Santos advance

Robinho scored his first goal since returning to Santos, as the Brazilian Serie A club advanced in the Copa do Brasil on Thursday.

In just his second appearance in his third stint at his boyhood club, Robinho struck the opening goal in their 2-0 victory over fourth-tier Londrina, which saw Santos triumph 3-2 on aggregate and reach the round of 16 of Brazil s premier cup competition.

Santos and fifth-tier club Santa Rita progressed on Thursday, while on Wednesday Serie A outfits Sao Paulo, Internacional and Fluminense were all surprisingly eliminated.

At Santos Estadio Urbano Caldeira, Robinho opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, collecting a throw-in that was chested down by Leandro Damiao, before dribbling past two opponents and then smashing his shot into the…

Former Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Netherlands striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has been appointed as manager of League One side Northampton Town.

Hasselbaink has been without a job in management since his dismissal by Queens Park Rangers in November 2016, and he takes over a Northampton side without a single point from their first four league games of the 2017-18 season.

Following the Cobblers dire start to the campaign, previous manager Justin Edinburgh parted company with the club at the end of August and Hasselbaink will seek to guide Northampton to their first league victory since March.
