Moments of joy offer Australian football window into happiness revolution

“If I only came tonight just to watch that goal, it was worth it,” remarked commentator Stan Lazaridis following Bruno Fornaroli’s superb finish for Perth Glory against Wellington Phoenix on Friday night. “You’re not supposed to see goals like that in the A-League are you?” he added, tongue-in-cheek.

It was a strike that showcased the Uruguayan’s singular brilliance as a No 9 in this competition. He received the ball with his back to goal and shielded it long enough to lure his marker out of position and buy time for the onrushing Joel Chianese. He then spun through 180 degrees and ghosted into space before presenting for…

Everton will hope to continue their good form and table progression, while Sunderland need a win to stop the rot and appease the increasingly disguntled supporters.

Now several key players have returned from injury Everton are starting to look their old self, and they find themselves nearing the top half of the table once more.  With Cahill, Bilayedtinov, Fellaini and Osman operating in midfield, they have pace power, tenacity and an eye for Goal. Lloris will not play again in 2019, says France boss Deschamps

Hugo Lloris will almost certainly miss the rest of 2019 due to an elbow injury, according to France head coach Didier Deschamps.

The Tottenham goalkeeper dislocated his elbow after landing awkwardly during his side s 3-0 Premier League defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

Spurs have not yet offered an indication on his recovery time, but Deschamps expects Lloris to be out of action until the new year due to ligament damage.

I talked to him after he recovered emotionally from what happened, Deschamps told a news conference. We talked again [on Monday] and had more medical examinations.

It is difficult to give you an exact date in terms of how long he ll need to recover. The possibility of a fracture has been ruled out, but his ligaments are af…

Ballon d´Or 2019: Van Dijk ´respects greatness´ after losing out to Messi

Virgil van Dijk conceded he had to respect greatness after losing out on the 2019 Ballon d Or to Lionel Messi.

Barcelona and Argentina forward Messi won the prize for a record sixth time having scored 41 times in 44 club appearances for Barcelona, with whom he won a 10th LaLiga title last season.

Success in the Champions League eluded him, though, as Van Dijk helped Liverpool oust Barcelona in the semi-finals en route to a sixth triumph in Europe s most premier club competition.

Van Dijk s performances for the Reds in that competition and with Nations League finalists Netherlands ensured he finished second in the voting for the Ballon d Or, though he had no qualms about being pipped to the prize by Messi.

It was amazing, Van Dijk said of his 2019.

Premier League round-up 13/08/2011

The Premier League kicked-off earlier today and there were some very interesting results. Newly promoted QPR suffered a nightmare start to their return to the top flight, as they lost 4-0 at home.

The Trotters took the lead just before half-time through a superb strike from defender Gary Cahill.

That lead was doubled as QPR defender Danny Gabbidon put the ball past his own keeper. And they were three up in the 70th minute as Ivan Klasnic’s deflected shot beat Paddy Kenny.

The home sides misery was completed in the 79th minute as midfielder Fabrice Muamba slotted home from a through ball from Ivan Klasnic.

Wolves enjoyed a good first day of the season with a 2-1 victory at Blackburn’s Ewood Park. Argentinian attacking midfielder Mauro Formica opened t…
