Redknapp wanted Suarez, Hazard at Tottenham

Harry Redknapp was considering a move for Luis Suarez and said Eden Hazard was dead keen on a switch to Tottenham when he was manager of the club.

Redknapp s men eventually finished the 2011-12 season in fourth in the Premier League, while they reached the FA Cup semi-finals.

Then linked with the England job, the 69-year-old said Spurs were close to signing Suarez and Hazard.

I was managing a Tottenham team I thought could go on and win the title, I genuinely believed that, Redknapp told talkSPORT.

We got Louis Saha and Ryan Nelsen on free transfers – we were short, we had injuries at centre-half and I had no striker.

If we had gone out [and invested] then, Luis Suarez was the player we were looking at.

Suarez joined Liverpool i…

Puyol: I have lived the dream

An emotional Carles Puyol expressed his pride at having lived the dream at Barcelona after calling time on his trophy-laden career.

The 36-year-old will retire at the end of the season after a long-standing knee injury finally took its toll on the combative centre-half.

Puyol is a one-club man who won six Liga titles and three UEFA Champions League crowns, earning himself a reputation as one of the game s true greats along the way.

Addressing a farewell event held in his honour at Camp Nou on Thursday, Puyol recalled playing football with his brother as a child when such lofty achievements seemed mere fantasy.

I would never have thought then that I would have this great career, he said.

I ve lived the dream of so many young kids, doing what I most enjoy in …

Kjaer: Saving Eriksen was a team effort, I am not a hero

Simon Kjaer insisted he is not a hero for his quick-thinking actions to save Christian Eriksen, who collapsed after suffering a cardiac arrest in Denmark s Euro 2020 opener.

In concerning scenes in Copenhagen against Finland in June, Eriksen received CPR on the pitch with his team-mates forming a protective screen around him.

The Denmark midfielder has subsequently been fitted with a pacemaker and encouragingly returned to Inter s training ground in August – Eriksen s health being the only thing that matters to Kjaer.

Kjaer was one of the first to the scene and prevented Eriksen from swallowing his own tongue as he placed his team-mate into the recovery position.

The centre-back was hailed as a saviour but he told Corriere della Sera: I m not a hero, …

Bayern Munich 2 AEK Athens 0: Lewandowski puts Germans on brink of last 16

Bayern Munich are within touching distance of the Champions League knockout stages after a Robert Lewandowski double secured a routine 2-0 Group E win over AEK Athens on Wednesday.

Benfica s draw with Ajax in the group s other game means that Niko Kovac s side have opened up a two-point lead at the summit and know that a point against the Portuguese side in three weeks time will cement their place in the last 16.

Kovac has been under pressure this week after a disappointing 1-1 Bundesliga draw with Freiburg on Saturday, but he will be relieved that his side came through this clash unscathed.

They were far from their best against Marinos Ouzounidis side – who now have no chance of progressing – and were indebted to Lewandoswki s 31st-minute penalty and smart f…

Djourou hopes historic Hamburg survive

Johan Djourou believes former club Hamburg are on the right track despite being in danger of suffering relegation from the Bundesliga.

Hamburg are the only club to have never dropped out of Germany s top division, but they head into the final weekend of the season in 17th place.

Christian Titz s side boosted their survival hopes with a run of three wins in four league games, though defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt last time out left them two points adrift of Wolfsburg and the relegation play-off place.

Djourou was in the Hamburg line-up that won the play-off against Karlsruhe to stay up three years ago and they must beat Borussia Monchengladbach on Saturday to have a shot at salvation, while also hoping Wolfsburg lose – or draw with a significant swing in goal dif…

Wenger warns Oxlade-Chamberlain exit would do ´big damage´ to Arsenal

Arsene Wenger believes the departure of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain would do big damage to Arsenal as he called on the midfielder to stay at the Emirates Stadium.

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been with the Gunners since signing from Southampton in 2011, but is out of contract at the end of next season.

Wenger is eager not to lose the 23-year-old, who is one of a group of first-team players – including Kieran Gibbs, Mesut Ozil, Aaron Ramsey and Alexis Sanchez – to have a deal due to expire in 2018, with all negotiations on hold until the end of 2016-17.

I personally think it is vital that Chamberlain stays at Arsenal, Wenger told reporters.

We bought him when he was very young, we have built him up and I think he has a great mentality.

I like his men…

Bruno and Zlatan both winners – Rashford acknowledges Ibrahimovic and Fernandes similarities

Marcus Rashford believes there is a common winning mentality shared by Bruno Fernandes and Zlatan Ibrahimovic – something Manchester United must channel if they are to get back to winning silverware.

Ibrahimovic is in line to return from an abductor injury when Milan host his former club in the Europa League on Thursday, with the round-of-16 tie all square at 1-1.

The veteran forward, whose surprise return to international football with Sweden was confirmed this week, joined United on a free transfer in 2016 and was a talismanic figure during his first season in England.

Across all competitions, Ibrahimovic scored 28 goals   including a brace in United s 3-2 EFL Cup final win over Southampton.

The Red Devils also lifted the Europa League in…

Hakimi swaps Madrid for Dortmund in two-year loan deal

Borussia Dortmund s busy pre-season transfer activity has continued with the capture of Achraf Hakimi from Real Madrid on a two-year loan deal.

The highly rated right-back will remain at Signal Iduna Park until the end of the 2019-2020 season.

His opportunities with European champions Madrid appeared limited following their acquisition of Alvaro Odriozola from Real Sociedad as Dani Carvajal s deputy.

Carvajal himself made a similar move to Bayer Leverkusen in 2012, spending one season in Germany before Madrid exercised their buy-back option.

Achraf Hakimi is a young, very dynamic full-back, who has played for Real Madrid and the Moroccan national team at the highest level, said Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc.

The 19-year-old, who has wo…

Real Madrid 3 Espanyol 0: Hosts respond after back-to-back defeats

Real Madrid bounced back from consecutive defeats by earning their first Liga points of 2015 with a routine 3-0 win over Espanyol.

A Liga defeat to Valencia last weekend was followed up by a Copa del Rey loss at bitter rivals Atletico Madrid on Wednesday but, although Fabio Coentrao was sent off early in the second half, Real never looked at risk of losing three games in a row for the first time since 2009.

Karim Benzema provided Espanyol with an early warning at the Santiago Bernabeu as he blasted against the post after just 10 minutes, and the breakthrough followed shortly after as James Rodriguez found the net following Cristiano Ronaldo s assist.

The FIFA Ballon d Or nominee then watched on as Gareth Bale doubled Real s lead with a fine free-kick in the 2…
