Braga stun Seville, Werder deny Samp in Champoins League

Spain may have claimed the World Cup this summer, dumping out neighbouring Portugal along the way but the boot was on the other foot Tuesday as Braga denied Sevilla a place in the lucrative Champions League group phase.

Werder Bremen also qualified by the skin of their teeth, ousting Italy s Sampdoria in extra-time after coming back from three goals down, the 3-2 final scoreline enough to give the Germans a 5-4 win as ex-Chelsea man Claudio Pizarro struck crucially to make the difference.

Braga won their home leg by the only goal a week ago but they swiftly built on their advantage with Brazilian Matheus putting them ahead on the half hour before Rodrigo Lima hit a second-half hattrick to send the Portuguese into the pool stage for the first time.

Alexis not for sale, say Barca

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu insists that the club are not looking to sell Alexis Sanchez.

Alexis joined Barca from Serie A outfit Udinese in 2011, and has scored 38 league goals in 88 appearances for the Catalan giants.

The 2013-14 campaign was his most productive, with 19 La Liga goals, and on Tuesday Bartomeu moved to dismiss speculation linking the Chile international with a move away from Camp Nou, with Juventus reportedly interested in bringing the forward back to Italy.

He’s not for sale, he told El Mercurio. He has a contract with us and is an important part of the squad.

I know nothing about interest from Juventus. No one has made an official offer.

Sanchez has had a great season and, of course, will be a part of Barcelona next season…

Mbappe dismisses Ballon d´Or chances after PSG´s below-par season

Kylian Mbappe believes Paris Saint-Germain s failures last season have voided his chances of winning the Ballon d Or.

The France star scored 39 club goals in all competitions, but the Ligue 1 champions mounted a largely underwhelming first campaign under head coach Thomas Tuchel.

PSG dramatically crashed out of the Champions League in the last 16 and failed to defend their Coupe de France and Coupe de la Ligue crowns.

Mbappe finished fourth in the Ballon d Or voting in 2018 but does not expect to rival the likes of Barcelona captain Lionel Messi and Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk this time around.

This year? You have to be realistic, I do not deserve it, Mbappe told Ouest-France.

There are players who have done more. With PSG, we did not win…

Wenger hints at move for Mahrez after revealing admiration for Leicester star

While Arsenal have not made a bid for Mahrez – who wants to play regular Champions League football – one could be forthcoming.

We have not made a bid, but personally, I like the player, yes. I think he made a huge impact when they won the championship, Wenger told beIN Sports.

Germany 7-1 Latvia: Muller on target as Low´s men round off Euros build-up with rout

Germany rounded off their preparations for Euro 2020 in style as they routed Latvia 7-1 in Dusseldorf.

Having been held to a 1-1 draw by Denmark last week, Germany were unsurprisingly much more impressive against significantly inferior opposition.

Two superb finishes in the space of two minutes from Robin Gosens and Ilkay Gundogan put the hosts in command before Thomas Muller made it 3-0 inside half an hour.

Goalkeeper Roberts Ozols was credited with an own goal to make it 4-0 after good work from the influential Kai Havertz, and his Chelsea team-mate Timo Werner followed Serge Gnabry in getting in on the act, with Leroy Sane having the final say after Aleksejs Saveljevs consolation.

Valencia face crucial matches

Valencia manager Unai Emery is hoping history does not repeat when his side faces Atletico Madrid in La Liga on Saturday.

The fourth-placed side are eyeing off a spot in the Champions League for next season, but it was the Madrid club who denied Emery the chance to manage in Europe s illustrious football competition in the 2009/10 campaign, beating them 1-0 in May 2009 to oust them from the top four.

Emery was motivated to ensure they would not allow Atletico to do the same on Saturday, despite Valencia s six-point cushion from fifth-placed Athletic Bilbao and their 14-point buffer from Quique Sanchez Flores side.

Two seasons ago, Atletico Madrid cost us a lot of points that perhaps kept us out of the Champions League. So we are aware of their threat. We have t…
